Some great teams get lost in the shuffle of the past. Some come tantalizingly close to greatness, but fall short in the end. The 1987 Detroit Tigers are one of those teams.
They had the best record in baseball. They entered the playoffs heavy favorites against a supposedly mediocre Minnesota Twins team. But they lost—badly–and became not much more than a footnote in the franchise’s past. 30 years later, a look back at that team yields plenty of memories, including a spirited final week in which the team roared back to win a division title against all odds.
