Why 1968 Tigers reserve Wayne Comer still receives fan mail every day

Wayne Comer is amazed. It has been 51 years since he was a reserve on the Detroit Tigers’ World Championship team, 47 years since his last big-league game and, at 75-years-old, he still gets fan mail.

“About every day of the year,” he said, adding with a chuckle, “They tell me how great I was.”

Mostly baseball cards, but also baseballs, pennants and photos are delivered to his home in Shenandoah, Virginia, hoping for an autograph. He gets to them all.

It’s crazy, Comer even said, for a guy who played in 317 games over parts of five seasons with a career batting average of .229 to receive such interest.
